Helping Create Better Nautical Charts

How well do we know our seas?

Are Our Nautical Charts up to Date?

Hydrographic surveying of our seas to produce depth data on charts is a costly process, which is why even around the busy coasts of the UK and Europe only 50% of the waters are properly surveyed. If you extend this globally, the figure drops to a mere 10%.

There are some 10 million seagoing vessels around the world. We believe that if they log their position and depth, whilst going about their usual business, this will quickly help fill this data gap. This is called ‘crowd sourced bathymetry’

The following questionnaire is to understand peoples’ awareness of ‘crowd sourced bathymetry’, and the reasons why they may, or may not, decide to take part.

Please spend a few minutes completing it.  Your views are important to us.

At the end you will be given the option of remaining anonymous or leaving your contact details, as we would like the opportunity to follow up some responses with a discussion over the phone or Skype.

All individual responses will be treated as confidential, though we may publish the aggregated results.
