For the purpose of this survey, we only consider as parliamentary committees dealing with gender equality:
 
  • Committees which have “gender equality” or other words with a similar meaning in their title. Examples include: “Gender Equality Committee”, “Committee on Equal Opportunities Between Men and Women”, “Committee on Gender and Social Affairs”, etc.
  • Committees which do not have “gender equality” or other words with a similar meaning in their title, but which are competent, as explicitly mentioned in their mandate, to address gender equality matters.

Scrutinise all Bills from a gender perspective
Scrutinise the Executive’s policy for compatibility from a gender perspective
Obtain information from the Executive about the justification for actions or inaction which affect gender equality and women’s rights
Scrutinise State’s compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
Initiate inquiries of its own choosing
Scrutinise proposed treaties on gender equality, and other international treaties with implications for gender equality and women’s rights, and report to Parliament thereon, prior to ratification
Ascertain and review the Executive’s reasons for not acceding to or ratifying existing international human rights treaties on gender equality and women’s rights

Review the allocation and expenditure of funds in the State budget to support measures to promote and protect gender equality and protect women’s rights
17. Committee involvement in the most recent national reporting exercise to the UN CEDAW Committee, which supervises implementation of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and committee involvement in other national reporting exercises
