To celebrate this milestone, Luath Press are publishing a book and are offering you the opportunity to have your work included. The book is being edited by Dr Jim Johnston who works at the Parliament and Professor James Mitchell from the University of Edinburgh. We're working with them and the Scottish Parliament to give you the chance to see your writing published and are delighted to launch this “Letter to the Scottish Parliament” competition.
The theme of the book will be “Is the Scottish Parliament well placed to tackle the big issues facing Scotland over the next twenty years?” We’d like you to tell us what the Scottish Parliament has done well and what still needs to be done and how.
Lots of different people have been invited to submit thought-provoking pieces which will provide critical insights and impressions of the Parliament while also looking to the future. The book is due to be published in June 2019.
Sounds good, right? Here is how you can get involved.
This activity is open to young people aged 11-20 in Scotland. Complete this form and write a letter setting out your hopes and aspirations for the Scottish Parliament over the next 20 years. Letters must be no more than 500 words in length and can be about anything relating to the Scottish Parliament. Be creative, be imaginative and be innovative!
Once you submit your letter you'll receive 150 points and if your letter is selected for publication you'll receive another 250 points!
You can also record your 'letter' as a video/audio recording and email to codesign@young.scot. If selected, these entries will be converted into text for the book.
We welcome entries in English or your preferred language (Gaelic, Hindi etc.) Any of these entries selected for publication will also sit alongside a translation in English.
All entries will be reviewed and shortlisted for judging by a selected panel. All Letters submitted may be shared with Scottish Parliament and the Published. Other information submitted including your name, age, local authority and information shared through the optional equalities section of this form will be accessed by Young Scot. If your Letter is selected to be published your name and local authority may be shared with the Scottish Parliament and the publisher.
A selection of the letters received will be published in the book. The winning authors will be invited to the launch event for the book in the Scottish Parliament. The published letters may be edited following discussion with the authors.
Please keep the language used appropriate. Any submission deemed offensive will not be considered. Young Scot and the Scottish Parliament may come back to you to discuss the content of your submission should amendments be required.
Submissions will close on 20th March 2019.
Submissions (including you Letter and information shared) will be accessed by Young Scot, the Scottish Parliament and Luath Press. The winning entries will be made publicly available. Young Scot may also use entries to create future content.
