BSc Digital & Technology Solutions Professional degree apprenticeship survey

Purpose

The Digital and Technology Solutions Professional degree apprenticeship is designed as a ‘core and options’ model, delivering the skills for a range of specialist occupations (Business Analyst, Cyber Security Analyst, Data Analyst, IT Consultant, Network Engineer and Software Engineer). By the end of the programme, the individual is competent to perform the relevant specialist occupation. Currently a degree is included in the apprenticeship. There is a proposal that the degree should no longer be included as part of the apprenticeship.

This survey seeks views on the likely impact of replacing the BSc Digital & Technology Solutions Professional degree apprenticeship programme (which integrates an apprenticeship with an honours degree), with a Level 6 Digital & Technology Solutions Professional apprenticeship which does not contain a degree.

Input is sought from all affected communities including employers, degree apprentices (prospective, current, and graduate), parents/guardians, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), schools, colleges, and private training providers.

About the removal of the degree qualification

The change from a degree apprenticeship to a Level 6 apprenticeship would affect the following features of the programme:

Decision making process

The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) has asked for justification of the continued inclusion of a degree in this programme in line with current policy requirements.

With that policy, it is only possible to retain the degree within an apprenticeship if it meets one of the following three criteria:
  1. It is a regulatory/mandatory requirement in the relevant occupational area;
  2. It is required for registration within the relevant profession; OR
  3. It is used as a ‘hard sift’ by employers – i.e. if for the relevant occupation, employers expect new recruits to have a degree and / or if the individual would be disadvantaged in the job market if they do not have a degree.
This survey seeks to explore the evidence for criterion c.

IfATE will review input, including the results of this survey. They are also willing to consider a more holistic view if there is clear evidence that this proposed change from the current approach would be detrimental to apprentices and employers.

We really value your input on this, thank you for taking the time to respond to this survey. Please answer as many or as few of the questions as your circumstances allow. None of the questions are compulsory and all contributions are welcome.

Note: degree apprentices starting on this programme in 2020 will be using the current standard, which includes the degree. Any changes to the standard will take effect from January 2021.
